Smart lighting enhances safety while respecting the parks rich biodiversity and historical character
Located in the heart of Warsaw, Skaryszewski Park is one of the largest parks in the city, covering over 55 hectares. It is also one of the most popular, with sports facilities, ponds, a rose and dahlia garden, a bandstand, historical monuments and lush greenery.
In 2023, the city authorities, committed to preserving green spaces amidst urban development for both residents and tourists, decided to upgrade the lighting infrastructure on the park's main avenue, from the entrance at the Washington Roundabout to Jeziorko Kamionkowskie, to ensure safety and comfort after dark. The existing street lights were no longer providing the required lighting levels and it had become dark and slightly foreboding.
Lighting for people, nature and heritage
The park is home to 280 species of trees and shrubs, including rare specimens such as Amur cork trees and hybrid horse chestnuts. For the regeneration of the park, it was essential to protect its rich biodiversity, including the ash trees that line the main avenue, and restore its historic appearance.
We had the perfect solution to address safety concerns without compromising the park’s heritage: the ALBANY GEN2 controlled by the Schréder EXEDRA smart lighting platform.
Elegant ALBANY GEN2 enhances safety with historic ambiance
With its elegant Victorian-inspired design, the ALBANY GEN2 luminaire blends harmoniously into the park, reflecting the original lamps that lit the park when it opened in 1905 and thus enhancing its character.
Equipped with the latest generation of LEDs, it provides high-quality light with minimal energy consumption. It ensures that the main avenue is well lit when people are present, allowing them to relax and enjoy themselves, especially the more vulnerable such as the elderly and the young.
Smart lighting that adapts to real needs
All of the 149 ALBANY GEN2 luminaires are connected to the Schréder EXEDRA lighting platform so that they can be dimmed when lighting is not needed.
The luminaires are also fitted with motion sensors. The lighting is dimmed by 80% during the night from 9pm to 4am when the park is not as busy but immediately increases to full light output when someone arrives, ensuring perfect visibility.
By adapting the lighting to actual needs, only the required energy is used, reducing the city’s energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Lighting to protect the trees and shrubs
Approved by the International Dark-Sky Association as a responsible lighting solution, the ALBANY GEN2 directs light exactly where it is needed on the ground, ensuring that there is no light spill to disturb the trees that provide shade for visitors and enhance this natural sanctuary.
The electrical cables for the luminaires have also been moved to the centre of the avenue, away from the trunks of the trees, to help preserve them.
Lighting that follows the rhythm of the day with FlexiWhite
All of the luminaires are also equipped with Schréder’s FlexiWhite solution to transform this urban oasis into a harmonious environment that respects the natural rhythms of day and night, ensuring a safe and healthy park for people and wildlife.
The FlexiWhite solution adjusts the colour temperature throughout the night. From sunset to 9pm, the luminaires provide a warm white light (3,000K) for a relaxing environment as people wind down from their daily activities.
From 9pm to 4am when no-one is present, the colour temperature changes to a much warmer white (2,200K). The park is then lit with a soft light that is healthier for the flora and fauna. When the motion sensors detect people arriving, the colour temperature changes to 3,000K to ensure a safe walking environment.
Lighting to reduce maintenance and costs
To reduce maintenance interventions and costs, the ALBANY GEN2 luminaires are built to last. They are made of robust, recyclable materials that ensure durability and longevity.
Coupled with Schréder EXEDRA’s advanced monitoring system, any potential anomaly is immediately detected and reported to the local authorities who have access to the system at all times with an user-friendly app. They can anticipate actions, avoiding unnecessary on-site interventions and optimising maintenance operations.
